A VISIT was made to the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) Project by Women, Family and Community Development Minister Dato’ Sri Rohani Abdul Karim on 7 August 2017.
12 members of the People with Disabilities Council and 8 senior citizens joined Rohani for the visit.
Rohani arrived at the Tun Razak Exchange Station at 2.05pm and was given a tour of the station by Malaysia Rapid Transit Corporation Sdn Bhd (MRT Corp) Sungai Buloh-Kajang (SBK) Line Project Director Mr Marcus Karakashian.
Karakashian explained to Rohani that this station is the deepest underground station.
Due to the depth levels of the station, there are 2 sets of lifts; one lift catering to individuals from the street level to the unpaid concourse level and another from the paid area on the concourse level to the platforms.
Features for people with disabilities have been catered for such as a special wider lane at the automatic fare collection gates for individuals on wheelchairs and tactile tiles for those who are visually impaired.
The delegates then took a train ride to the Muzium Negara Station.
Here, Karakashian highlighted that each of the 7 underground stations have its own themes which can be seen on the interior design and benches.
In fact, these benches were designed by College and University students who had entered a competition organised by MRT Corp and MMC-Gamuda KVMRT (T) Sdn Bhd to determine the winning benches.
“I am glad that I managed to have a ride on the MRT service and I feel excited for what is to come in the future. MRT Corp has managed to cater for the disabled community and I can only imagine on what is to come in the future,” said Rohani.
The visit ended with Rohani and the delegation returning to the Tun Razak Exchange Station.
