The recent Occupational Safety, Health, and Environment (OSHE) Conference 2022 was jointly organised by Malaysia Rapid Transit Corporation (MRT Corp) Sdn Bhd and the Turnkey Contractor for the MRT Putrajaya (PY) Line Project, MMC Gamuda KVMRT (PDP SSP) Sdn Bhd on 7 July 2022 at the KVMRT Training Centre, Sungai Buloh.
With the theme “Investing in Safety and Environmental Sustainability for the Future”, the conference was held to promote a safe, healthy and environmentally-friendly workplace. Additionally, an award ceremony took place during the conference to recognise and honour the contributions made by Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) practitioners involved in the MRT PY Line Project.
The conference began with an opening remark delivered by MRT Corp Head of Standard and Compliance, Encik Azhar Sofah. Soon after, the first presentation was delivered by Tuan Ir. Ts. Ahmad Rusdi Kamal from the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH), with the topic. ‘Occupational Safety and Health in Construction Industry Management (OSHCIM)’.
After a short morning break, Tuan Ir. Ts. Ahmad Rusdi continued the session with his second presentation on the topic OSHA 1994 Act, discussing the amendments made to it in the year 2020.
Immediately after the first presentation had concluded, a number of guests arrived to partake in the appreciation ceremony for the SHE practitioners.
Present during the ceremony were the Director of the Department of Safety and Health (DOSH) Selangor, Tuan Bahrudin Mamat, Deputy Director of the Department of Environment (DOE) Kuala Lumpur, Dato’ Ts. Dr. Haji Mohammad Ezanni Mat Salleh, MRT Corp Chief Executive Officer Datuk Mohd Zarif Hashim, MRT PY Line Project Director Dato’ Amiruddin Ma’aris, MMC-Gamuda PY Line Project Director Encik Adil Putra Ahmad, MRT Corp Leadership Team, and representatives from the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) and Land Public Transport Agency (APAD).
During the ceremony, a speech was delivered by Encik Adil, where he commended the initiatives undertaken by the various parties involved in the project, in promoting a safe and healthy workplace on-site.
A speech by Dato’ Amiruddin soon followed. In his speech, he commented on the laudable effort made by the Work Package Contractors (WPCs) involved in delivering the PY Line Project safely, including the improvements made to the safe manhours throughout the project.
In recognising their contribution in safety and health to the PY Line Project, certificates of appreciation were presented to the representatives of 22 companies involved in the project. This recognition was given to all WPCs, for their achievement in best safe manhours without Loss Time Injury as of May 2022, and for their commitment in their roles in elevating the safety standards of the PY Line Project.
The award ceremony was also held to honour their role and contribution to the PY Line Project in achieving 5-star rating for Design and Construction, based on the sustainable INFRASTAR rating tool. The certification was previously received on 28 December 2021.
After a short lunch break, the conference continued with the second presenter, Dato’ Ts. Dr Hj Mohammad Ezanni who presented on the topic ‘The Government’s Initiatives Towards a Sustainable Malaysia’.
Later, the third presenter for the conference, Dr Kalathini Nesadurai from Climate Governance Malaysia delivered the final presentation for the day with the topic ‘Why do We Need to Address Climate Crisis?’.
The 226 participants present during the OSHE Conference 2022 went home with furthered knowledge and information in safety, health, and environment, with the award recipients achieving a well-deserved recognition for their contribution to the project.
