A KNOWLEDGE sharing session about the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) Project was presented to Masters of Faculty of Science and Technology students from The National University of Malaysia (UKM) on 21 September 2018.
The Project Delivery Partner for the MRT Project, MMC-Gamuda KVMRT (PDP SSP) Sdn Bhd had its Engineering and Design Management Department Senior Design Manager Dr Tey Chun Yean gave an overview of both the MRT Sungai Buloh-Kajang (SBK) and MRT Sungai Buloh-Serdang-Putrajaya (SSP) Lines.
The 23- strong delegation was led by UKM Graduate Competency Head Dr Nurul Huda Abd Karim. They were briefed about the Project at the MRT Information Centre, Seri Kembangan.
With regard to the MRT SBK Line, Dr Tey highlighted figures that were reported by the operator of the service, Prasarana Malaysia Berhad (Prasarana), that over 30 million users have used the service since the launch in December 2016. This has helped minimise the number of cars entering the Klang Valley. Previously Dr Tey mentioned that it was estimated that over 2 million cars enter the Central Business District of Kuala Lumpur during the peak hours of the day.
Speaking on the MRT SSP Line, he went on to explain the various difficulties that the project faces and engineering modifications that are need to be adapted to ensure that the Project is built in a safe manner. Amongst it is that certain spans are built at a longer span than the average 39.8m length span. This is due to the alignment that would go through certain areas that crosses existing immovable obstructions such as rivers and existing railway systems.
Malaysia Rapid Transit Corporation Sdn Bhd Strategic Human Resource Deputy General Manager Encik Khairunizam Musa then went on to answer questions from the floor about career opportunities with MRT Corp. Questions such as what is the highest number of staff in demand in the project was asked and he mentioned that the demand for civil engineers is at a high.
The visit ended with lunch served to the attendees.
