TWENTY participants from the ASEAN University Network – Disability and Public Policy (AUN-DPPnet) Accessibility and Universal Design Training course visited the MRT facilities on 17 April 2019.
The visitors comprised of persons with disabilities from the ASEAN region and were accompanied by ten volunteers from University Malaya. Through the course, they would acquire the skills of understanding accessibility and universal design to become Access Auditors and applying them for policies and implementation.
As such, the visit was aimed at learning what facilities that MRT has put in place for the disabled community at both the stations and the trains of the Sungai Buloh-Kajang Line.
The visit began at Kwasa Sentral MRT Station where Malaysia Rapid Transit Corporation Sdn Bhd (MRT Corp) Strategic Communications and Stakeholder Relations Junior Executive Encik Maharezan Mahadzir welcomed the delegates.
MRT Corp Planning and Design Senior Project Manager Encik Mohd Fadzil Abd Hadi then briefed the group on the facilities provided to cater the differently-abled such as a special wider lane at the automatic fare collection gates for individuals on wheelchairs, special dedicated place for wheelchairs in the train and tactile tiles for those who are visually impaired.
The delegation then took a train ride to Pasar Seni MRT Station and had the chance to get insights on the interesting traits along the SBK Line and as well as the train itself.
Upon arriving at the Pasar Seni MRT Station, Fadzil took the opportunity to highlight the unique theme of the 7 SBK Line underground stations. He also explained on the emergency escape procedure at an underground station.
To end the visit, the delegates took a group photograph to commemorate the day.
