IN CONJUCTION with the Malaysia Rapid Transit Corporation Sdn Bhd (MRT Corp) beginning works for the construction of the MRT Sungai Buloh-Serdang-Putrajaya Line (SSP Line) at the end of June 2016, MRT Corp hosted the media for a visit to the KVMRT Training Centre, Sungai Buloh on 10 June 2016.
The visit to the Training Centre was to educate the media about the initiatives in Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) that MRT Corp practices specifically for the SSP Line.
Before the walkabout commenced, MMC Gamuda KVMRT (PDP) Sdn Bhd Head of Department, KVMRT Training Centre, Mr Thava Kumar gave a short briefing about safety measures to be taken whilst in the premises. He advised that for the visit today, some designated areas have been defined as Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) zones and with that, attendees are required to put on their protective headgears, high visibility vests and special boots whilst in those areas.
Upon the completion of his speech, MRT Corp Standard and Compliance Director, Tuan Syed Mahdhar Syed Hussain then explained the safety practices that MRT Corp incorporates. He also went on to explain the differences between big projects and mega projects. The standards and values of the two are different, thus the method of approaching the two varies.
In addition to that, Tuan Syed elaborated that MRT Corp has introduced five major initiatives related to SHE which aim to reduce the number of accidents at the MRT Project worksites.
The five initiatives include: construction design management, specifications and construction obligations, SHE performance scheme, safety passport scheme and master training programme.
After Tuan Syed’s speech, MMC Gamuda KVMRT (PDP SSP) Sdn Bhd Project Director, SSP Line, Mr Param Sivalingam led the media to a tour walkabout of the training centre.
He began by showing the media a scaffolding training exercise. Major risks are identified before works begin which are working at height and crane lifting. MMC Gamuda (PDP) Sdn Bhd Training Centre Master Trainer Encik Ahmad Nazari demonstrated to the attendees about the methods that are taken for working at height.
MMC Gamuda (PDP) Sdn Bhd Lifting Master Trainer Mr Kunaselan Krishnan then demonstrated the lifting exercise that is done by a crane to lift heavy machinery. There is a high importance in ensuring the communication between the individual manning the crane and individual giving the direction.
Mr Param then led the media to a walkabout of the exhibits. He explained the different components that were on display.
The visit ended with a press conference attended by Tuan Syed Mahdhar, Mr Param and MRT Corp Project Director SSP Line, Dato’ Amiruddin Ma’aris.
