Malaysia Rapid Transit Corporation Sdn Bhd (MRT Corp) presented a MRT train model to SRK and SMK Convent Kajang as part efforts to promote the MRT Sungai Buloh-Kajang Line to schools located along the alignment.
During the event, which took place on 25 June 2014, a model of the “Hibiscus Star” MRT train was handed over to the school. The train model, which measures 3.4m, will be displayed in the school canteen in front of the teachers’ room.
The model was built to show the “Hibiscus Star” design, one of three designs submitted by train supplier Siemens AG of Germany for the MRT trains. The other two designs were “The Guiding Light” and “Diamond Express”.
The “Hibiscus Star” was inspired by Malaysia’s national flower, the Hibiscus. It represents courage and unity of its people while, the five petals symbolizes the Rukun Negara.
MRT Corp ultimately chose “The Guiding Light” for its trains. The design is inspired by the beauty of Kuala Lumpur’s architecture.
Around 500 students participated in the event. They were elated that their school was being presented with the train model and greeted the MRT Corp team warmly.
SRK Convent Kajang headmaster Puan Khatijah Yusof started the ball rolling with a welcome note, followed by a speech by MRT Corp Director of Strategic Communications and Public Relations, Encik Amir Mahmood Razak. Encik Amir then gave a presentation about the train.
The students were amazed by the story about the MRT trains and the designs.
Video clips about how people in Japan packed into trains to get to work and the MRT Sungai Buloh-Kajang alignment video were also shown to the students.
Following the event, MRT Corp parked its Mobile Info Truck (MIT) at the school compound for a week. The MIT gave students and teachers easy access to information about the MRT Project. The MIT also had games such as Snake and Ladder, Spin and Win and MRT Trivia for the students to play.
MRT Corp’s school engagement programme hopes to enable the company to establish better ties with schools which any suffer some impact while construction work is being carried out. The programme also aims to create awareness among students as they will be future users of the MRT.
