The MRT Putrajaya Line has been officially launched by the Prime Minister YAB Dato’ Seri Anwar bin Ibrahim on 16 March 2023, during a launch ceremony held at Serdang MRT Depot.
The event signifies the completion of the Putrajaya Line Project and marks the official handover of the infrastructure to the operator, Rapid Rail Sdn Bhd.
Welcoming YAB Prime Minister at the launch ceremony were the Minister of Transport YB Tuan Anthony Loke Siew Fook and Chief Executive Officer Datuk Mohd Zarif Mohd Hashim.
Also present were Selangor Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari, Home Minister Senator Datuk Seri Saifudin Nasution Ismail, Local Government Development Minister YB Tuan Nga Kor Ming, Tourism and Culture Minister YB Dato’ Sri Tiong King Sing, Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Mohd Zuki Ali, and senior government officials of various Government ministries.
The ceremony began with an opening remark by Datuk Mohd Zarif, where he thanked all parties involved in delivering the Putrajaya Line Project, including staff, contractors and Government authorities.
This was followed by an introductory speech by YB Minister of Transport, in which he shared on the benefits and reach of the new alignment, and the Government’s vision on Malaysia public transportation.
In his address, YAB Prime Minister placed emphasis on the importance of a nation’s productivity, where he touched on the difficulties and stress faced by the public in their daily commute to their workplace. He had also congratulated MRT Corp for the good governance and transparency practised in project tender exercise.
To further encourage public usage of the new line, YAB Prime Minister in his officiating speech had announced free rides for MRT users entering or exiting any of the 36 stations along the Putrajaya Line, beginning 3pm on the same day until 31 March 2023.
Following the launch gambit, YAB Prime Minister and entourage were brought to the Rolling Stock Maintenance Office (RSMO) to view the trains up-close, where they were welcomed by 300 MRT Corp employees with loud cheers and excitement.
After a tour of the RSMO, YAB Prime Minister and guests were taken on a train ride to Putrajaya Sentral MRT Station to experience the new alignment, where the launch ceremony ended. Onboard, 100 MRT Corp staff had the opportunity to be among the first to ride the train with the Prime Minister.
The much-awaited launch of the entire Putrajaya Line has been well-received by the public, with many making a beeline to the stations at 3 pm on the day to be among the first to experience the new line.
